A while after OCS I was the company commander of a Group HHC. My only contact with MPs was later in my career. We had rifles and '60s, I didn't get a M1911 until I went infantry.Īfter getting out of the Army I joined the AK NG, where I was infantry. MPs in Vietnam was interesting to say the least, we had a POW holding area, and did road clearing operations and convoy security.

I didn't mind, I didn't like them anyway. They said combat vets don't play well with prisoners, most of which (at the time) were deserters. When I came back I was sent to the 67th MP company, Ft Devens MA.

Transferred to the Infantry (2/502nd Recon Plt). After Jump School I went to the 82nd MP Company 82nd ABN Div. Paid $11.00 at Onslow Guns for my first badge and still have it. We didn't even have issue badges or Sam Browne Black duty gear in 1978, had to buy our own or wear the white cotton web belt and flap holster. If the Provost Marshal approved it, you could carry it. Carried it until late 1980 when all MPs were ordered to carry the new Monadnock black nylon sticks. I made it in 1978 at the base wood hobby shop. This was during a change of command ceremony at MAG29, 2nd Marine Air Wing. This photo was taken at MCAS (H) New River, NC, in 1980 while assigned to Traffic Division. This photo was taken in Jan 82 the Sneeds Ferry Gate, Camp Lejeune, NC, just one month prior to transferring over to CID. When I arrived, all that MCB Lejeune and New River had were sedans, 1/2 ton Chevy and Dodge Pick-Ups, Dodge M880 1 1/4 Ton Pick-ups and Dodge Vans equipped as Paddy Wagons, all equipped with radios and blue light bars. We didn't have the M151 Series Jeeps at MCAS (H) New River or MCB Camp Lejeune, NC, when I left MP School Ft McClellan in Feb 78.
